Moseley – Thomas Moseley (1890 – 1971)

Thomas Moseley at the wedding of his daughter Daisy Moseley in 1939

Thomas Moseley was the 2nd born of his father Thomas’s marriage with Sarah Ann Hands on the 8th July 1890 in Marston Sicca, Gloucestershire. He was one of 17 children by his father and his two wives Lucy Leadbetter and Sarah Ann Hands. At the 1911 Census, Thomas was 20 years old and was a Farm Labourer, working with his two brothers, Henry and Francis and his father on their own farm at Pebworth Pastures, about 1 mile from the main village of Marston Sicca. Thomas joined the Royal Field Artillery (No: 101933) and served in France during WW1, he received two medals in WW1 and a further Star in WW2, where he was in the Home Guard based in Moreton in Marsh. We do know that his younger brother Francis James Lawson was killed in action in France/Belgium in 1918 just before the close of WW1. The next time that we have a record of Thomas is his wedding to Janet Davis in Miserden, near Stroud on 9th November 1919. Thomas was registered as living at Long Marston and Janet at Miserden at the time of the wedding and there is no record of why Janet was a Domestic Servant in Miserden or how they had come to meet up. However we do know that William and Elizabeth, Janet’s parents, were living at Lower Clopton from 1915 to 1919 and Long Marston is less than 3 miles from there.

Thomas and Janet then resided in or close to Miserden, as they are listed in the Gloucestershire Electoral Roll, at The Camp and Honeycombe Farm until 1928 when they then moved to Lemington Grange, near Moreton in Marsh. We can only speculate here that as the Manor at Miserden, where Janet had worked and perhaps Thomas as well, was owned by the Wills family – of WD & H O Wills the Tobacco company – as was Lemington Grange, being part of the Batsford Estate. By the time they left the Miserden area they had two children Daisy Moseley born 23rd May 1920, only 6 months after the wedding and then Joyce born 14th March 1922.

Thomas was listed in the 1939 Records as a Farm Carter and Janet was also listed as a member of the Nursing Auxiliary Service. They continued to live at Lemington Grange Lodge until sometime between 1946 and 1949 when they moved to a property in Hospital Rd, Moreton in Marsh and then finally to Stow Rd, Moreton in Marsh between 1952 and 1959, where they lived until their final days. Thomas died on 2nd November 1971 and Janet outlived him until 1986.
